This debut LIYF on Long Island collaboration is brought to you from Fire Island’s Sunken Forest, which is considered to be a “globally rare” ecological community. The unique assemblage of plants that comprise Sunken Forest are found in just a few locations throughout the world. I was thrilled to be able to forage the bark from fallen sassafras trees, one of the most abundant in this unique ecosystem, and use it to create this month’s color. Between the orange shade of the dye from the bark and the distinctive root beer scent the leaves emit when you rub them together, this color immediately brings to mind everything pumpkin spice!
