Plum Island is an eight mile long barrier island off Long Island's east coast and home to the Parker River Wildlife Refuge.  The sand along the beach features occasional dark stripes against the normal white sand, much like the contrast stripe in this intarsia scarflette.  The dark sand is composed mainly of the semi-precious gem garnet, while the white is mostly a mixture of feldspar and quartz.  The scarf forms its keyhole by means of a three-needle bind-off, and being knit in a bulky yarn works up quickly.
