Herring gulls are the most prevalent gull on Long Island, having adapted to all the different water habitats on the Island.  They do not migrate, and have little fear of humans; they can be observed very closely as they hunt for food on the beaches.  The winged shape of this scarflette is achieved by short rows.  The shape and contrasting colors evoke the herring gull's black-tipped wings and snowy white chest and head.
