The Artists' Colony in Oakdale, Long Island is the site of the former farm of Idle Hour, the William K. Vanderbilt Estate.  After the Vanderbilts, the brick buildings that once housed chickens, pigs, dogs, and horses became charming cottages inhabited by artists.  The purl pattern in these mittens is reminiscent of the brickwork, while the colored roving represents the bright artistry going on behind the walls.  Wear these mittens on the coldest of days, and both the pop of color and the fleecy thrummed lining will warm your heart as well as your hands.
