Cold Spring Harbor refers to the freshwater springs running through the area and into the harbor.  The land was purchased by the English from the Matinecock Indians who referred to the town as "Wawapex" meaning "place of good water".  Cold Spring Harbor is a quaint and humble town, rich in fishing and whaling history.  The cable and ribbing pattern on these mitts are reminiscent of interlocking pieces of whalebone that used to wash up on the shore.
